African American Studies Books

This list of highly regarded books in the field of African American Studies was compiled from favorable reviews found in the journals Callaloo, African American Review, The Black Scholar, Ethnic & Racial Studies, Journal of African American History, Journal of Black Studies, Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, Journal of Negro Education, Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society and The Western Journal of Black Studies.

“The University of Florida is, among other things, a vibrant intellectual community within which African American Studies has the potential to thrive. Library resources are imperative to this end. We in the African American Studies Program are truly fortunate to have as partners a conscientious library staff that is attentive to cues from recent book reviews on what we should be reading to keep up with the cutting-edge  trends in the history, philosophy, and social science of African Americans and the wider African Diaspora. It would make a difference if the books on this list were available to our students and colleagues.”
– Faye V. Harrison, Director of African American Studies, University of Florida
