| Colorblind Southern Jazz: Subverting Jim Crow | |
Dr.
Charles Joyner, Burroughs Distinguished
Professor of Southern History and Culture at Coastal Carolina University,
will talk about – and play examples of – jazz ranging from ragtime through
modern jazz in the presentation “Colorblind Southern Jazz: Subverting Jim
Crow” on Thursday, April 10 at 4:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Incarnation,
1522 W. University Avenue (directly across the street from Library West). A
reception begins at 4:00 in the adjoining hall. This event is free and open to
the public. It is sponsored by the Howe Society, which supports the UF Smathers
Libraries Department of Special and Area Studies Collections. For further

Dr. Joyner is perhaps best known for his book Down by the Riverside:A South
Carolina Slave Community, which won the National University Press Book
Award. In addition to his writing and teaching, Dr. Joyner has been active in
the production of films, television and radio programs on the South. Included
among his numerous awards are the Ethel Fortner Writer and Community Award, the
South Carolina Governors Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities, and
an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Presbyterian College.
