NoneCONSER Operations Committee meeting report (held April 27-28 in the James Madison building of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.)
http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/conop2006.htmlNaomi Young reported on the impact of the Library of Congress’ recent
decision to cease providing controlled series access in the bibliographic
records that its catalogers produce (http://www.loc.gov/catdir/series.html).
Program for Cooperative Cataloging members resolved to continue to support
providing authority control for series titles.
Naomi also reported on the CONCER Operations Committee progress on the Access
Level Record for Serials Pilot Project (http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/access-level.html).
The goal of this project is to define a streamlined and user-centered minimum
standard for cataloging serials records. As of the CONSER meeting, the pilot
project had been completed resulting in a proposed standard that allows
20% faster cataloging.
Report on MetaLib Implementation -
http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/committees/resnav/MetaLibPSC0524.docLeiLani Freund reported on the results of usability tests of the MetaLib product, conducted in Spring 2006. MetaLib will allow searching across many different databases that must currently be accessed independently. The recent tests revealed some usability issues including the need for a more effective online help function. These problems should be solved by Fall 2006. Two implementations were proposed for the public beta test of MetaLib to take place during Summer B. The first implementation features a simple Google-like QuickSearch window to be located at the top of the Library’s home page, while the second implementation would offer a link on the home page to an explanatory web page before directing users to the MetaLib interface.
Verde Implementation meeting report
Michele Crump, Doug Kiker, and Jason Fleming attended a demonstration of Verde. This staff-side software tool for managing electronic resources offers the advantage of being able to share data with some existing systems, including ILL and the upcoming version of Aleph. However, Verde will not share data directly with MetaLib. A limited number of seats will be available for Smathers staff when Verde comes online in August.
Dewey to LC serials reclassification
Naomi reports that although the reclassification of Dewey serials to LC
has hit a snag due to a spreadsheet error, the project will be completed
on time.
Naomi also reports that the reclassification of Florida newspapers is almost
completed. The newspapers will be ordered geographically by city.
Print serials cancellations
Michele reports that all print serial titles from Blackwell Synergy will be cancelled. This represents over 400 titles that are currently received in both print and electronic format. Further cancellations of print serials are pending potential changes in the budget.
Coutts- soon to come shelf ready
Michele reports that items from blanket and standing orders from Coutts will soon arrive shelf-ready.
The next meeting will be held on TBA at 2:00 PM in the Library East conference room
