Minutes from October 27, 2004 Meeting
MSL L107, 2:00 p.m.
Present: Rich Bennett, Cecelia Botero, Robena Cornwell, Michele Crump, Jason Fleming, Doug Kiker, Cathy Mook, Robert Singerman, Jan Swanbeck, and Naomi Young
Migration of Universal Messages: RICH All the Universal Messages were supposed to migrate to Aleph, and they should have been translated into the proper text messages that need to be displayed. The translation tables must not have been in completely in place when the migration occurred. A list of these records can be created in NOTIS for review. The translated codes populated the 852 z subfields in the holdings record, while the untranslated codes were migrated to the 852 x subfield. We are not sure if any kind of global change would be possible for FCLA to change everything using a report they could run.
Cancellations: It used to be that when we cancelled a subscription that was it. Now we have situation in which a cancelled print item can become instead an electronic journal subscription. The problem is that when students see cancelled they are prone to assume that we no longer have any materials for the title. We will no longer be using codes (um) for cancellations because of how Aleph is set up, so we will need to agree on what the text to be inserted into the holdings will say. *We should send our ideas to PS to see what they say. DOUG maybe we should change the wording for the note electronically to online instead MICHELLE this might have been decided by PS already.
NAOMI Problem with Blackwell: We get all the years online for the STN title. However, for everything else we get from Blackweel we only get the current year and the previous one. Should we generate new text for non-STN titles? DOUG Peter McKay is trying to get our package upgraded to include all titles. But for other titles like this, maybe "Full text of Current and Previous Year" ? CECILIA This could depend on what happens with the MARC record product.
*Rich wants to remind everyone that any new online titles need to go through him so that they can be added to the serials solutions list.
Michele has all our license agreements and she will need volunteers to help her go through them and figure out what we have.
Rich says that he went to the Blackwell site and found two titles that we have access to, but were not in our catalog. This is a potential project for Jessica York to go through and add 856s
Cecilia wants to propose that all the libraries share one record for electronic serials when they are created by the new product. The OWN code will need to be set to GLOBAL. We could each pay on this same record.
Serials Solutions MARC Records: RICH Serials Solutions currently keeps up with the data better. We can't really choose anything until we examine everything more fully. Should we set up a task force into looking into this?
Next Meeting: Wednesday Jan. 26th 2004 2:00-3:30 (Library East)
Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
Respectively submitted,
Jason Fleming
