Announcements
- A merger between Heckman Library bindery ( former binder for Smathers)
and ICI ( owner of the current Smathers binder, Southeast) was announced
recently. No significant changes should be noticed here at UF but keeping
a slightly closer eye of the quality of the product for the next few months
would be in order.
- Three OPS students have been hired (One for 20 hours a week in Preservation
and 2 at 10 hours a week at MSL) using Preservation funds to correct sorting
problems in items records associated with titles held by those 2 locations.
After completion of the active periodical titles, inactive periodical
titles will be targeted next. Item records for the smaller libraries will
also be 'fixed' by OPS staff funded and directed out of Preservation.
- A small ad hoc task force charged with clarifying the procedures for
Lost and Missing items was charged back in October. It progresses well
and will make a fuller report at the upcoming Joint Aleph TS/PS/CM meeting.
Reports from ALA
Cornell predicted that ERMs will replace Catalogs in the future. Yale is going
to go with Verde and OhioLink and Cornell have decided to use the III product.
UPitt is using a product called
Zoom that is powered
by WebFeat. It gives the user a one box portal to type in a keyword search
and then the patrons have the option to use one of several databases or GoogleScholar.
Here is a link to their Digital Library Home Page

ExLibris announced a new product that they hope will be available by the end
of this year. That product is called Primo and it offers many of the same
functionalities as MetaLib but it also FRBR-izes records. This program will
use SFX, Metalib, and the catalog as its knowledge base.
It doesn't look like anything we have in pdf format will be able to load into
Verde. Prior to loading we should look through our records and ensure that
they conform to standards. See
Appendix
D of the DLF ERMI.
A couple of staff members attended the
Webfeat
(Federated search engine software) demo and report that there is an ability
to customise is well developed and it doesn't appear to be that much different
than Metalib. Rich saw a new version of the
AquaBrowser
being demonstrated as well.
Resource Navigation Group
Leilani reported that a new task force has been created to begin assessing
user's responses to the Metalib product. Marilyn Ochoa will be heading this
group. The plan on implementing user evalutions this semester and maybe bringing
up Metalib in the Summer. This will give Tom, Rich and Leilani the time to
focus on the technical aspects of Metalib. UNF is using
Central
Search instead of Metalib. Central Search is engineered by Serials Solutions.
Metadata Summit
The next meeting will be held on February 23rd, 2006 at 2:00
PM in the Library East conference room
