Creating a pattern

  1. Push record to Cataloging module and open HOL record
  2. Expand pattern from template
    • Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+E to open the template window
      • Choose pattern by frequency
      • Alter data in fields to represent the actual information from the journal
        • typically enumeration and chronolgy fields
        • example: expected will be v.65:no.1(2005:Jan.) template reads v.1:no.1(2000:Jan.)
  3. OR create pattern manually
    • Create an 853 field
    • Based upon knowledge of piece fill in values:
      • 1st [$$a] and 2nd [$$b] levels of enumeration (typically v. and no.)
      • Bibliogrpahic units per next higher level [$$u] (if a quarterly then typically 4)
      • Numbering continuity [$$v] (c= Number increments continuously , r=numbering restarts every year i.e. 12345 or 1234, 1)
      • 1st [$$i] and 2nd [$$j] levels of chronology (typically (year) and (month))
      • Choose the frequency [$$w] from a wide range of values
      • Add a field linking [$$8] # (typically 1)
    • Create an 853 X field
    • Based upon expected piece, fill in the values that correspond to the 853 subfields
      • 1st [$$a] and 2nd [$$b] levels of enumeration
      • 1st [$$i] and 2nd [$$j] levels of chronology
      • The expected date for an item is determined by the start date [$$3] in the pattern and the value present in the Claim date of the Subscription Info (Tab 3)
      • Starting date:
If you expect the first issue to come in sometime in mid-January of 2008 then use the value 20080115 [$$3]
      • Subscription linking [$$9] #: links the pattern to the subscription in the Serials module
      • Add a field linking # (typically 1) [$$8]
  4. Save record to server
  5. Push record to Acquisitions/Serials Module
  6. Click on Serials tab
  7. Click on node [N] Patterns
  8. Click on Level X tab of the upper pane
  9. Click on Expected Schedule tab of the lower pane
  10. Clikc on Open Items button
  11. Verify accuracy on node [K] Check In
