Current Endowments

The Mark Thomas Barrett Memorial Book Fund benefits the collections in political science and international relations. More than 500 titles bear the bookplate in honor of Julianne and the memory of Mark Thomas Barrett.

The Jessie Shaw Bates & Mortimer B. Bates, Jr. Fund supports the George A. Smathers Libraries through the purchase and enhancement of electronic resources.

The Louise Seaman Bechtel Visiting Professorship is designed to allow qualified children's librarians to spend a month reading and studying at the Baldwin Library within the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of more than 103,000 volumes of children's literature published from the 1670s to the present. The fellowship is endowed in memory of Louise Seaman Bechtel and Ruth M. Baldwin and provides a stipend of $4,000 to support up to three annual visiting professorship awards. In addition to the professorship, a second endowment, the Louise Seaman Bechtel Endowment, promotes the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature through the acquisition of research materials to complement the library.

The C. Farris & Julia B. Bryant Florida History Preservation Fund assists the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries by providing the funding needed for the library digitization project entitled "Great Floridians Political Papers Project for the New Century". The income generated by this endowment advances the efforts of the Digital Library Center and the preservation of political papers.

The Mary Ellen Burnett Endowment for Works on Animals supports the acquisition of library resources related to animals.

Dr. and Mrs. Allen Y. DeLaney and Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Hawkins, Sr. established the DeLaney-Hawkins Rare Book Endowment. The endowment helps further the goals of the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections and improve the rare books collection.

The Ted Fearney Book Endowment in Architectural Studies complements the Ted Fearney Endowed Professorship in Architecture Fund, which is housed in the College of Design, Construction and Planning. The book endowment provides the funds needed for the faculty member in the endowed professorship to acquire research materials such as books, journals, electronic resources and microfilm. Barbara Fearney established the endowment in memory of her late husband, Professor Edward M. (Ted) Fearney, a professor of architecture and design at the University of Florida for 35 years.

The Flagler Endowment allows the George A. Smathers Libraries to focus on the future by generating income to be used for the libraries' greatest needs.

The Chase family established the Florida Agricultural History Endowment to ensure that the contributions of past generations of Florida farmers, growers, ranchers and other agricultural workers were not forgotten. The endowment supports the collection of materials that document the state's agricultural history, including farm records, letters, journals, diaries and photographs. The materials are preserved in the Special and Area Studies Collections.

The Melvin J. & Marilyn S. Fregly Endowment for Biomedical Sciences & Humanities Collections helps to facilitate the acquisition and processing of collections that help bridge the divide between biomedical sciences and the humanities in the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. The endowment creates income to purchase  materials in the Special Collections department as well.

The Herbert Russell Gaylord Endowment furthers the George A. Smathers Libraries' goals by generating income to meet the libraries' greatest needs. Most recently the funds generated from this endowment have been utilized in an ongoing Cuban project, the Notary Protocols. The libraries are working to preserve this information in and make accessible a veritable gold mine of unique historic documentation in Cuba's National Archives that chronicles three centuries of Spain's colonization of the New World.

The Graeffe Fund for Music supports the Music Library as well as the UF School of Music by providing funds to purchase contemporary (post 19th-century) music sources in all formats.

The Harold & Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Fund benefits the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections. The endowment in rare books allows the librarians to systematically put together better collections, to fill in the gaps where necessary, and expand the collections in a vibrant, cohesive manner.

The Haskel Hess Education Library Endowment was established in memory of Haskel Hess, a man who spent his life offering wisdom and assistance to others. There are now more than 1,000 graduate students in educational leadership, counseling and personnel, special education, educational psychology and other disciplines who can pursue their research in the Education Library as a direct result of the funds generated by this endowment.

The Dr. Madelyn M. Lockhart Book Fund in African Studies was the first book endowment established to support the Center for African Studies. The fund helps to develop the growing African Studies collection by providing income to purchase books, manuscripts, photographs, videos, rare books and historic maps.

The John D. MacDonald Endowment promotes the acquisition of research materials related to contemporary authors and modern American literature.

The Muschlitz Endowment for Chemistry was established in honor of Dr. Earle E. Muschlitz, Jr. to advance chemistry research at the University of Florida and assist the libraries in adding new research materials. Electronic products such as SciFinder Scholar and Crossfire Beilstein as well as an array of products enhance the teaching and research efforts in virtually every area of chemistry.

The Parents Library Endowment was established to meet the growing needs of the undergraduate student population. UF offers more than 100 undergraduate majors, and enrollment for the 2003 fall semester included approximately 35,000 undergraduate students.

The Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica was formally dedicated in March 1981 to support the teaching and research missions of the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida. The library is named for Isser and Rae Price, whose sons, Jack and Samuel Price of Jacksonville, Florida, established the Price Library Endowment to support sustained development of its collections.

The Todd C. Prosser Memorial and Ted C. Prosser III Book Endowment in Florida History supports the purchase of books and other materials relating to Florida history.

The Rhine Endowment for Art enhances the collections with the research material so important to scholars in the arts.  This is particularly important as the George A. Smathers Libraries builds collections to support the new doctoral program in Art History.

The C. Archibald & Alleyne Robertson Library Purchase Fund facilitates the acquisition of research materials, including books, manuscripts, papers, and reproductions, dealing with or related to English literature written before 1674.

The Margaret Drier and Raymond Robins Book Endowment was established to support the enhancement of the libraries' collections by providing funds necessary to obtain research materials in labor, religion and civics.

The Tyner Endowment in Chemical Engineering maintains and enhances the George A. Smathers Libraries' collections in chemical engineering. The UF Chemical Engineering department was recently ranked fifteenth in the nation in research funding by the National Science Foundation, and U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate engineering program sixteenth in the nation in the 2004 annual issue of the best graduate schools.

The University Athletic Association annually donates funds to partner with the George A. Smathers Libraries through the University Athletic Association Endowment. The UAA is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of Florida. Since 1992, the UAA has donated more than $400,000 to the university library system through proceeds from pay per view telecasts of Gator football games. When state budgets have fallen, this partnership has provided the libraries with the funds needed for patron computers, books and journals.

The Van Dyke Endowment helps the George A. Smathers Libraries to meet its greatest needs.

The Waldo Endowment in Theatre supports the acquisition of research materials for theatrical studies.

The Calvin Yeomans Special Collections Enrichment Fund advances the initiatives of the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections.
