The Howe Society was founded in 1980 to commemorate the acquisition by
the University of Florida of the Parkman Dexter Howe Library of New
England authors.
The Howe Society encourages and helps to support the development of the
University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries' Department of Special
Collections, including, among the rare books and manuscripts, major
holdings in historical children's literature, Florida history, the
performing arts, and the university archives. Its various activities
include:
- Lectures, exhibitions and receptions for promoting and expanding
awareness of these collections to the public and to scholars
- Educational and cultural activities featuring the special
collections
- Publication of catalogues, research guides and other appropriate
documentation to permit intellectual access to the collection
- An annual dinner featuring prominent scholars, librarians and
cultural leaders, and other social events
The Howe Society establishes a partnership between the university and
those individuals who value scholarship and want to enrich the University
of Florida through the enhancement of its libraries' department of special
collections.
