The George A. Smathers Libraries
It has been said that a great university cannot exist without a great
library. The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida
manages over four million volumes, 6.7 million microforms,
thousands of full-text electronic journals and more than 500,000 individual
maps.
The
Smathers Library Window Project
After some 75
years, some of the beautiful "granite glass" in the Smathers Library Special Collections Research Room became broken, cracked or damaged. Wood sash rails had deteriorated and window frames warped and
caused damaging leaks. By
carefully restoring the Gothic windows, the current harmful conditions
have been remedied. Moisture intrusion has stopped and ultraviolet light - the
enemy of library materials, is now filtered out using invisible modern
technology.
Your Support Will Make a Difference
Your gift of
$5,000 will sponsor a window, help preserve the university's
architectural heritage and ensure a better environment for our intellectual
heritage. In appreciation, you will receive a unique commemorative
sculpture to document your contribution to the Smathers Library
Improvement Project. The sculptures are made with fragments of the
original glass that could not be reused in the restoration. Thus, you will be able to enjoy and display a part of our history
- glass that helped light the way for thousands of UF students since
1925. In addition, a small
plaque is placed beneath each set of windows in the Smathers Library
to recognize in perpetuity those who helped in this important effort.
