Description: Circulation Assistant
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of AFA Library and collection.
-
Knowledge of AFA policies and procedures.
-
Knowledge of all AFA sublocations.
-
Knowledge of LUIS technical and public modes.
-
Basic knowledge of microcomputer applications.
-
Understanding of Dewey and LC classification
systems.
-
Understanding of AFA policies/procedures regarding
the use of telephone, photocopy machine, etc.
-
Knowlege of AFA procedures and locations concerning
the collection/distribution of mail.
-
Ability to charge and discharge materials
using the NOTIS circulation system.
-
Ability to work harmoniously with other AFA
staff
-
Ability to work courteously with the public.
-
Must be dependable (on-time,etc.)
Responsibilities:
Serves patrons at the AFA Library
service desk. Performs circulation transactions and answers
directional and general information queries. Refers reference questions
to the librarians.
Duties:
All Staff:
-
Observes library policies and procedures applicable
to the position.
-
Helps to maintain the library as an environment
conducive for study and research by ensuring that policies concerning conduct,
eating, drinking, etc. are observed.
-
Answers telephone and routes calls as appropriate.
-
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Circulation Assistants:
Desk:
-
Works scheduled hours at the public service
desk.
-
Performs basic and some supervisory level
circulation system transactions.
-
Responds appropriately to patron inquiries
about circulation and reserves reading matters.
-
Answers general information and directional
queries.
-
Refers reference questions to the librarians.
Makes referrals to other staff when appropriate.
-
Keeps statistics regarding directional and
reference questions on appropriate days.
Other:
-
Assists with reserves processing as assigned.
-
Assists with fines/billing/problem reports
as assigned.
-
Assists with recalls/item-needed requests
as assigned.
-
Assists with statistics documentation as assigned.
-
Assists collection managers with catalog searches
if desk traffic permits.
-
Assists with opening/closing procedures if
schedule permits.
