Description: Serials/Monographs Assistant
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of AFA Library and collection.

Knowledge of AFA policies and procedures.
-
Knowledge of all AFA sublocations.
-
Knowledge of LUIS technical and public modes.
-
Basic knowledge of microcomputer applications.
-
Understanding of Dewey and LC classification
systems.
-
Understanding of AFA policies/procedures regarding
the use of telephone, photocopy machine, etc.
-
Knowlege of AFA procedures and locations concerning
the collection/distribution of mail.
-
Ability to charge and discharge materials
using the NOTIS circulation system.
-
Ability to work harmoniously with other AFA
staff
-
Ability to work courteously with the public.
-
Must be dependable (on-time,etc.)
Responsibilities:
Serials and Monographs Assistants
are responsible for physically processing new serials and/or monographs
received by the AFA Library.
Duties:
All Staff:
-
Observes library policies and procedures applicable
to the position.
-
Helps to maintain the library as an environment
conducive for study and research by ensuring that policies concerning conduct,
eating, drinking, etc. are observed.

Answers telephone and routes calls as appropriate.
-
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Serials:
-
Sorts current periodicals and current periodicals-related
correspondence.
-
Physically processes (stamps, targets, etc.)
new current periodicals received.
-
Shelves current periodicals including display,
current periodicals, stacks, and reference.
-
Re-shelves periodicals in reading room and
Current Periodicals Area at the circulation desk. Shelf-reads and corrects
shelving errors in these areas.
-
Inserts missing issue slips for binding units
with missing issues. Maintains a list of those missing issues (computer
file).

Replaces, repairs and labels boxes in Current
Periodicals Area as needed.
-
Shelves duplicate and non-LUIS periodicals
and maintains the areas that house these periodicals.
Monographs:
-
Physically processes (stamps, labels,
targets, shelves, etc.) new monographs and new serials that are not current
periodicals (including books, videos, microforms, computer files) for several
sublocations in the AFA library,including stacks, reference, circulation
area, special collecitons, and oversize.

Previews all new videos within one week of
receipt in order to detect audio and/or video problems.
-
Updates new materials processing statistics.
-
Targets and labels materials charged out to
the processing shelf (circulation desk).
