Description: Stacks Maintenance Assistant
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of AFA Library and collection.
-
Knowledge of AFA policies and procedures.
-
Knowledge of all AFA sublocations.
-
Knowledge of LUIS technical and public modes.
-
Basic knowledge of microcomputer applications.
-
Understanding of Dewey and LC classification
systems.
-
Understanding of AFA policies/procedures regarding
the use of telephone, photocopy machine, etc.
-
Knowlege of AFA procedures and locations concerning
the collection/distribution of mail.
-
Ability to charge and discharge materials
using the NOTIS circulation system.
-
Ability to work harmoniously with other AFA
staff
-
Ability to work courteously with the public.
-
Must be dependable (on-time,etc.)
Responsibilities:
Maintains the book stacks and
reading room areas so that patrons can easily find materials on the shelves.
Duties:
All Staff:
-
Observes library policies and procedures applicable
to the position.
-
Helps to maintain the library as an environment
conducive for study and research by ensuring that policies concerning conduct,
eating, drinking, etc. are observed.
-
Answers telephone and routes calls as appropriate.
-
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Stacks Maintenance Assistant:
Shelving and related activities:
-
Shelves library materials in call number order,
in assigned sections.
-
Maintains books in upright, tidy rows on the
shelves.
-
Shifts materials on the shelves to accomodate
new are returned items.
-
Reports spacing issues and problems to the
Access Services Manager.
-
Brings damaged materials to the circulation
desk to be processed for rebinding, relabeling, or preservation review.·
-
Shelf-reads a portion of the collection during
each shift, noting call number range read in the shelf-reading log.
General reading room/stacks area maintenance:
-
Clears books left unshelved in the stacks
on tables, carrels, and near photocopiers.
-
Pushes chairs under tables.
-
Turns off lights in carrels not in use.
-
Turns off media and microforms equipment when
not in use.
-
Throws away trash left in reading room and
stacks areas.
-
Refills scratch paper boxes near the public
workstations.
Other:
-
Searches for lost/missing items in AFA stacks
and in other libraries. Search requests should be checked on
a daily basis.
-
Assists with opening and closing procedures,
if scheduled during appropriate times.
-
Alerts supervisor to building maintenance
issues (lights out, etc.).
-
Courteously answers directional and equipment
questions while on duty.
-
Refers patrons with reference questions to
the service desk.
-
Keeps statistics of questions answered and
room-use of materials on assigned days.
