Copy Numbers on Holding records and Item records

The branch libraries no longer need the copy numbers on spine labels.

Except for several collections specified below, catalogers will no longer put copy number descriptions (i.e. c.2, c.3, etc.) in subfield t of the 852 field on Holding records and the Description subfield on Item records. Shelf ready books will not come with copy numbers.

Barcode numbers will serve as the unique identifier.

There is no plan to eliminate copy numbers retrospectively.

Exceptions:

Some specific collections materials still need copy numbers to distinguish their special characteristics.

Continue to put copy numbers on Holdings and Items for the following collections:

  • Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature
  • Popular Culture Collections (Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts, Jim Liversidge Collection, Suzy Covey Comic Book Collection)
  • Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection
  • Map and Imagery Library
