Item Material Type Guide
While working with new materials in Aleph, the cataloger must create item records for each piece cataloged. While filling out the Item Form, it is important that the cataloger chooses the appropriate Material Type, which is found under General Info (1) tab. There are four material types listed in the drop-down menu:

Material type affects the display of items in Web OPAC: the sort is different for items with material type ISSUE (as well as ISSBD) than those with BOOK type, for example.
The preferred display of item lists in Web OPAC is:
- Chronological order for all monograph sets and encyclopedias
- Reverse chronological order for all serials, including annuals
Material Type Selection
- BOOK - This material type is used when cataloging or adding:
- Monographs and monograph sets of all formats:
- CD
- Visual
- Audio
- Encyclopedias

Items are sorted in chronological order in Web OPAC:

- ISSUE - This material type is used when:
- Arriving loose periodical issues

Items are sorted in reverse chronological order in Web OPAC:

- ISSBD - This material type is used when:
- Arriving bound annuals that are ready to be processed and shelved

Items are sorted in reverse chronological order in Web OPAC:

- Adding bound annuals as part of Aleph's automated processes for collapsing items for binding
- ILL – ILL Order Project is a material type issued to interlibrary loan materials purchased for library users.
