Moving 856 Links
Some bib records are loaded into the catalog with 856 links to table of contents. This is particularly true for Library of Congress bib records, which also can have 856 links to publisher description (i.e., summary), contributor information, and sample text. If left as an 856 link, the Web OPAC results view displays a CONNECT NOW message that makes it appear as if the link is to the full text. In order to improve the Web OPAC interface and prevent user frustration, 856 toc links should be moved to 505s and other non-full text 856 links should be moved to separate 520s on the bib record. If a 505 is present on the record already, the 856 toc link should be deleted.
The Cataloging Macro Suite includes a macro called "toc link cleanup 856->505/520," which transfers the 856 links. If a 505 is already present on the record, the macro deletes the 856 toc link.
Ticklers
The macro adds one of the following ticklers to the bib record:
CAT lctoc done [yyyymmdd] - 856 toc link deleted; other 856 links moved
CAT lctoc [yyyymmdd] - 856 toc link moved
Library of Congress is creating 505s retrospectively for their records with 856 toc links. The second tickler allows us to identify which records do not have embedded 505s to possibly derive the data from OCLC.
Hotlinks
UF's Aleph functionality offers two options - either all 505s and 520s are hotlinked or none are hotlinked. If the former option is implemented, 505s and 520s without subfield u's will appear as clickable text and, if clicked, generate an error message. If the latter option is implemented, 505s and 520s with subfield u's will not be clickable. Currently, the catalog is configured so that 505s and 520s are not clickable.
