Classification Browsers

Click on Extended Menu

Standard Browser: Displays the classification schedules with links to other areas of classification and to the classification tables. Must calculate from the tables.
Type in HN101 ; click on table and find Mexico; range of ten numbers add to 100; go back and choose appropriate table (10 number country); go to table; calculate number for a book about social conditions in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Enhanced Browser: Adds support for calculation of tables. Automatically integrates table data into the main classification display. You must still click on a table link to jump to that table.
Type in HN101 notice the calculations after the HN101-942.7 list, the yellow means table modification has been applied. Find Mexico noting the range of numbers (111-120=ten number country); click on Mexico; find the appropriate table and apply for a work on social conditions in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Hierarchy Browser: This version of the browser automatically takes table links and you navigate hierarchically moving down or up one level at a time.
Type in HN101 the yellow means table modifications have been applied but now we see only Latin America and not Mexico. Click on Latin America; the list expands and now we see Mexico; note the range of numbers (10) and click on appropriate table; note that some numbers in the table are a range and are highlighted, click to expand further.

Classification Search

Caption index: Searches captions in all schedules (Caption is the term next to a call number in the schedule)

Input Arctic Regions in the Caption box (is not case sensitive)
   Browse will result in an alphabetically adjacent list
   Search will result in exact matches
Hit enter or click search - Displays a listing of call numbers with Arctic Region
Scroll to bottom and click subsets and check the H Social Sciences - Displays H call numbers with Arctic Region as Caption
Scroll down and change hierarchy to partial and click redisplay - Displays a portion of the hierarchy (Economic history and conditions …. Arctic Regions)
Scroll down and change hierarchy to entire hierarchy - Displays the full hierarchy (Economic history and conditions - by region or country - Arctic Regions)

Keyword index: Index of last resort. Keywords contributed from anywhere in classification records (captions, notes or other textual fields). Can do Boolean searches here but there is not phrase searching support. Searches separately for more than one word in the same record. Using and or or can limit or increase results.Example: Search hotlines.

Index term: Searches for cross references within the schedules.

Caption or Index term: Searches both captions and cross references.

Classification number: Search in combination with a caption or search alone. Search Netherlands in the H schedule.

LC Subject Headings

Structured: Index includes all subject headings and their tracings. Must be constructed correctly and with double dashes (--) between subdivisions. Sorts in traditional LCSH order: a subjects subdivisions come before the next subject.
Type in railroads; browse (clicking enter or search results in something that lists railroads appearance everywhere, i.e. Broader terms, ect.)
Results in a list of railroads with subdivision ; to see Railroads, Aerial you must scroll through all the subdivisions

Unstructured: This index includes all subject headings and their tracings. Sorts in dictionary order: a subjects subdivisions may be interfiled with other subjects.
Type in railroads; browse (clicking enter or search results in lists of railroads used anywhere)
Results in a list of railroads with subdivisions interfiled with subjects beginning with railroads

Structured Free-floating Subdivision: Index includes all free-floating subdivision fields and their tracings. Sorted in traditional LCSH order: a subdivision's subdivisions come before the next subdivision is printed.
Type in taxation-law and legislation ; browse
Notice the record retrieved when clicking R is a subdivision record

Unstructured Free-floating Subdivision: This field allows you to search subdivision records using the same unstructured approach that is used with the unstructured subject heading field.

Keyword: Keywords from subject headings and free-floating subdivisions are included. No stop words. No phrase searching. Each word searched as a separate criteria. Changing the and or or option will limit searches.

Classification Number: This index contains the classification number from each record (053 on subject authorities) that has one.
Type in RJ387.A25; enter or search retrieves exact subject matches; browse retrieves a list of call numbers and then clicking on the one you entered brings up the list of headings

Subject Heading & Classification Number Correlations

Returns information from the Library of Congress bibliographic database. The first 650 or 651 in a record in the LC database is searched and the results are presented as a top ten list. (10 most common call numbers given for a subject or 10 most common subjects associated with a call number)

Subjects: To search for a subject plus a subdivision, separate each subdivision with a space, comma, or period or --.

Classification number: Returns a list of classification numbers that comes closest to the request. Each classification number is a link, click on the link and it will expand the display to include subject correlations for the number.
