CATALOGING FOR THE MAP & IMAGERY LIBRARY: CD-ROM’s

CD-ROM’s containing geo-spatial data are usually designated to be located in the Map & Imagery Library. Such CD-ROM’s that appear designated for any other location should be placed on the Map Review shelf in the Processing area for a location decision review prior to cataloging. CD-ROM’s that have been designated for the Map and Imagery Library should be given to the Science and Social Science Cataloging Unit for cataloging.

Geo-spatial CD-ROM’s are cataloged according to standards established in AACR2r Chapter 3 and classified in the LC class schedule G. Subjects are assigned from LCSH. The library and collection UFMAP CD are used for Map & Imagery Library CD-ROM’s. By earlier rules geo-spatial computer files were cataloged using the computer file format and some still appear that way in the catalog, but they are currently cataloged using cartographic format and rules in AACR2r chapter 3.

Those Geo-spatial CD-ROM’s received as part of the federal depository program will normally be reflected in the catalog with MARCIVE records using SUDOC classification. Upon transfer to the Map & Imagery Library these are reclassified into the G schedule.

After full cataloging, which may be done either in the Map and Imagery Library or in the Science and Social Science Cataloging Unit area, call number labeling, stamping, etc. are provided for geo-spatial CD-ROM’s in the Map & Imagery Library and then placed in the appropriate cabinet.
