OCLC Authorization Mode Guideline

OCLC Connexion authorization modes are available for different levels of work. OCLC's Website Take Action on Bibliographic Records describes what tasks can be performed under each authorization (scroll to "Upgrade records" section).  See also OCLC Cataloging Authorization Levels: Record Actions and Upgrades.

The authorization modes used in the Cataloging and Metadata Department and the Acquisitions and Licensing Department include Search, Full, Enhance National, CONSER National, and Retrospective Conversion.

Authorization modes should be assigned as follows.  Refer to the Systems Liaison Cataloging and Metadata Department Coordinator or the Cataloging and Metadata Department Chair for authorization numbers and passwords.

Search:
Monographs Unit staff and general workstations
Serials Unit staff and general workstations

Full:
Copy Cataloging Unit staff and general workstations
Gifts and Exchange Unit staff and general workstations

Enhance National (i.e., BIBCO):
Science and Social Science Cataloging Unit staff and general workstations

Humanities and Special Collections Cataloging Unit staff and general workstations

CONSER National:
Serials catalogers (check with Naomi Young, Principal Serials Cataloger)

Retrospective Conversion:
Database Maintenance Unit staff and general workstations

Grant staff are assigned authorizations on a case by case basis.

Most staff outside of the Cataloging and Metadata Department and the Acquisitions and Licensing Department use the Search authorization mode or, in the case of Interlibrary Loan, the ILL mode.  Areas where selected staff use the Full mode authorization include Special and Area Studies Collections, Preservation, Documents, Maps, and Judaica.
