BIBCO at UF Report
Oct. 2001-Sept. 2002
UF participation in the BIBCO program has continued at a good pace. While our complete totals for the year wont be reported until the end of September, our averages for the first 11 months are 126 full and 43 core records (25 percent). The enthusiasm for contributing to the BIBCO program continues to be good, as well as the cataloger self-esteem associated with it. We have been fortunate to retain so many skilled and experienced catalogers and the quality and quantity of the BIBCO contributions reflect this. While one stellar cataloger continues to lead the way in number of records contributed, there are substantial numbers now contributed by several others and at least some participation from everyone at the rank of Archivist and above. The completed BIBCO Participants Manual is very much appreciated here, as is the richly informative cluster of information linked from the PCC/BIBCO websites. The requirement for NACO authority support for BIBCO record headings impacts Priscilla Williams work in NACO coordination, and her positive attitude and excellent work contribute strongly to our BIBCO contributions. Priscilla commented that she finds the newly available online tools in support of her name authority work very helpful. We now have a new SACO Coordinator in Tatiana Barr who heads the Special Collections, Architecture, Fine Arts and Humanities cataloging unit. Tatiana commented that she finds the email posting of the CPSO Summary of Decisions with the thinking behind the decisions very helpful and informative both for the ongoing SACO contributions and for helping us anticipate changes we will need to make in our catalog. Oversight of our BIBCO records consists chiefly of a monthly routine of sorting printouts into full and core, (while verifying correct coding of 042 and fixed fields), and reporting counts to the PCC and back to our catalogers with a note of thanks. Additional quality control on my part has been reduced to spot checking by close examination of those BIBCO records that come to me in record-editing. All original cataloging continues to undergo brief review by a second pair of eyes. Our copy-cataloging unit continues to handle those items we receive with BIBCO records as if they were from LC, provided they include usable LC class numbers. We are currently reviewing test dataloads for our new library management system, and it is likely that migration-related disruptions will slow down our cataloging in the coming fiscal year. We are also anticipating the upcoming implementation of rules for Integrating Resources, and are happy that our CONSER Coordinator Naomi Young will be helping us with it. Otherwise, things are currently going very well for our BIBCO program.
