HARDWARE INSTALLATIONConsidering the variety of PCs on the market, and to make this procedure concise, these instructions will assume that you have a modem already installed on your home computer.
SOFTWARE INSTALLATIONThe next important item to be sure to have is a Dial-Up Networking folder inside the My Computer icon on the desktop (if you're running Windows95). (If you do not see this folder, proceed to the Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs and follow these instructions):
CONFIGURING A NERDC CONNECTION(Additional documentation available from CIRCA will help establish a connection. The configuration instructions below provide supplemental parameters to enter in order to provide you access to the Smatherslib network domain.)Go to the Dial-Up Networking folder in My Computer to create a new connection. Enter the phone number for the computer you are trying to reach (currently, NERDC's number is 352-846-1501). Most other options are already set to an acceptable default, but look around in case there is an option you personally prefer on your computer. When finished, a new icon appears in the Dial-Up Networking folder with the name that you just assigned to the session. Look at the file properties for your new session. In the Server Type tab, make sure it says PPP for the server and that TCP/IP is checked. Press the TCP/IP Settings button. Select "server assigned IP" and "specify name server" and enter the following values:
Go to the Control Panel and open "Network" On the Configuration tab, you should see listed
On the left, choose Microsoft, and on the right choose TCP/IP. (Press OK) The Primary Network Logon should be "Microsoft Network" Now look at the Identification tab, and enter "smatherslib" as the workgroup (the other names are your choosing). Restart your computer if necessary. Go back to Network in the Control Panel and double click on TCP/IP (or highlight TCP/IP and press "Properties"). Enable WINS and enter the following:
Open the NERDC connection you just created in the Dial-Up Networking folder. Enter your username and password (if your logon is scripted, you'll have to type "ppp" at the final command prompt and press "Continue"). A Microsoft Networking window should appear which exactly like the one you see on your office computer when you start it up. Log on as usual with your id and password and domain Smatherslib. You should see a fully stocked Network Neighborhood, exactly as it appears on your office machine. If you want to use your Inbox, you can install the newest version of Microsoft Exchange by running the setup program in the Win95X folder on the Smathersnt2 server in your Network Neighborhood. Follow the instructions
given on the "Installing
Microsoft Exchange" webpage to setup your email profile.
