Last update Friday, September 7.

The process of upgrading takes about 2-2 1/2 hours, if all goes well.  If there are problems with the upgrade, this time will vary unpredictably.

Planning
Send a syshelp to systems the day before you plan to upgrade, providing the WSID(s) of the computer(s) you will be migrating to Windows 2000.
Make sure that everything is backed up.  There is a chance that everything will be wiped clean if there is any glitch in the upgrade process.  The My Documents and Favorites folders will be cleared during the upgrade.
The first batch of Dell Optiplex GX 110s, which were bought with PO#418944 (check the WSID card for the PO number), have two video cards.  This will cause problems with the upgrade.  Do not attempt to upgrade until one of the cards has been physically removed from the computer.  Similarly, you may anticipate problems with computers that have extra hard drives or hardware.

Preparing Computer for Upgrade
Check the network settings --
make sure the IP number is what is recorded for the computer
delete any dialup adapters
the only WINS  number should be 128.227.10.99
make sure the computer name  in DNS host name configuration matches the computer name on the Identification Tab (i.e. WSID9999).
restart later
Uninstall McAfee in add/remove programs.
Uninstall Front Page, if applicable.
Uninstall any Messenger programs, if applicable.
Restart.  A liaison must log back onto the network.

Running Upgrade Program
in the "Run..." box, type or paste (all on one line, with a space before /unattend):

\\smathersnt14\systemsw2kdist\winnt32.exe /unattend:win9xupgrade.txt

Troubleshooting:

If it tells you you do not have permission, you might not be included in the liaison group on the domain.  Have another liaison try and see if it works.  Send a message to syshelp requesting that they add you to the domain.

Check the spelling.  there should be a space before /unattend.

If you get a help screen, you typed \unattend instead of /unattend. The direction of the slashes is important

Try typing in parts of the hierarchy to see if you can get partway there.

You will get a blue screen with a grey window that looks odd.  This is normal.  It will run on its own for 45 minutes to an hour.  Check back periodically to make sure it is going well.
When the upgrade program is completed, it will ask the liaison to log on, and will ask for a new password.  Enter your network password and confirm it.  Don't register the upgrade.
Log on to the local machine (your only option) using the password you just entered.

Returning Computer to the Domain, Configuration
Right click on my computer, select properties.
On the Network ID tab, select properties.
Select the radio button by Domain, type "smatherslib" in the box, click OK.
Enter your network name and password in the window that pops up.
After a minute or two, a window should appear, saying "Welcome to smatherslib."  If not, check your network settings to make sure they made it through the upgrade.
Restart the computer and log back on to the local machine.
Right click on My Computer, select Manage.
In Local Users and Groups, select groups.
Add Smatherslib\Systems Liaisons to the Administrators group.
Add Smatherslib\Real Users to the Power Users group.

In Services, set the "Service status" to Stop and then set the "Startup type" to Disable for the following services: Computer Browser, DHCP Client, IIS Manager (if present), and Server.

Create network shortcut on All Users desktop

Navigate by clicking on My Network Places on the Desktop, then Entire Network.

Click on the words "entire network" in the left margin.

Click on the Microsoft Windows Network icon.

Create a shortcut for the Smatherslib icon on the All Users desktop.  This icon is identical to the network neighborhood that we are accustomed to.

All Users desktop is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users

Instruct users to ignore My Network Places and use the Smatherslib shortcut instead.

Restart and log onto Smatherslib.  Choose "No" when asked about saving personal settings to the smatherslib account

Updates and Installs

Install w2ksp2 in \\Smathersnt2\ReadOnly\W2KSP2. Accept the license agreement.  This takes 15-20 minutes.

Install upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5. Click on ie55setup in \\Smathersnt2\ReadOnly.

Reinstall Front Page, if applicable.

Do windows updates (used Windows Update under Start menu).

Install McAfee from SodaShoppe (www.software.ufl.edu). You will need your gatorlink ID and password.
Do not install with maximum security.
When it downloads, it will unzip.
Choose custom installation.  Install everything but Screen Scan, Send virus utility, and Emergency disk utility.
Enable the various scans and heuristics as usual.
Configure the autoupdate to download weekly.

Settings for Users

Have local administrator install printers for All Users.

Locate Windows 2000 drivers for side printers or Kensington Mouses and install them.

Have the primary user log on.

Bring up Outlook (It will go through some installation)

Bring in the Favorites folder from its backup location and put it in C:Documents and Settings\<userid>.  Click on "Yes to all" to replace the contents of the existing Favorites folder.

Cut the user's My Documents folder (plus the My Pictures and My Downloads, if applicable) from the C: drive and replace the user's My Documents folder in C:Documents and Settings\<userid>
