Your Staff Workstation

Your responsibilities:

Although there is a Systems Liaison who is assigned to assist you with your computer, all staff are encouraged to become proficient in using their work station. Your Systems Liaison is always available for assistance, should you need it.

In order to ensure that all employees have a basic understanding of how their computer works, all new employees receive a Workstation Orientation (see the checklist, if you are interested) from their liaison.

Regular maintenance of your computer including software updates, defragmentation, etc. are to be done by your liaison.

If you have any software that needs to be downloaded and installed, you should contact your liaison for this, as they have the appropriate administrator privilages that will allow for proper installation of the software.

Your liaison's responsibilities:

Non-liaison staff are not expected to set up new computers for themselves, deal with major computer foul-ups, or move equipment around. If you have a computer problem, you should attempt to contact your own liaison first and they will try to correct the problem. If your liaison cannot solve the problem, they have the option of contacting the department's Systems Liaison Coordinator for assistance or sending a message to SysHelp. Please do not attempt to create a SysHelp message yourself. (SysHelp is a way for liaisons to generate a trouble ticket for the Systems staff). If your liaison is not available, you should seek another liaison, preferably one located near you, to facilitate communication about the problem. A list of the Cataloging and Metadata Department Liaisons is available online.

Liaisons perform basic troubleshooting of computer problems, communicate problems to the Systems Department if necessary, and handle routine moves and installations of equipment. Cataloging and Metadata liaisons meet regularly with liaisons library-wide and receive extra technical training.  These duties are part of a liaisons job assignment, typically, 10% of the liaison's job.
