Since December, 2009, copy catalogers have participated in the NACO Program.  Instead of creating series authority records in Aleph for the local authority file, copy catalogers were trained to create and submit numbered series authority records to Connexion for review and submission to the National Authority File (NAF).

There was also a change in workflow for NACO participation among original catalogers.  As of March, all original catalogers contribute personal name authority records to the NAF without review.

We contributed 1,216 records this fiscal year, a decrease of 27% from (fy09) 1,665, a reduction by 449, overall. Personal name contributions decreased from (fy09) 870 to (fy10) 665 a decrease by 205 or 24%.  Again this year, personal name contributions represent over 50% of the total (fy10) NACO contributions, increasing from 52% in (fy09) to 54% in (fy10).  Corporate body names submissions decreased by 30% from (fy09) 350 to (fy10) 244, a decrease of 106.  Series contributions decreased from (fy09) 334 to (fy10) 208, a decrease by 126, or 38%.

I didn’t expect to see any increase in series contributions due to copy cataloging participation.  This was an opportunity to cease creating series authority records for the local authority file while increasing participation in NACO.  The timing for this was really great as the Cataloging Department’s cataloging priorities changed to accommodate cataloging 300,000 items in the STODOCS cataloging project that has no NACO component.

As cataloging priorities continue to change to meet the needs of our users, so must our national program participation.  The key to weathering the changes is sustainability through strong program support.
