1993 |
NACO contributions increased ever so slightly in fy06 from 1,991 (fy 05) to 1,993 (fy 06), a 0.1% increase. However, we show more significantincreases in different areas of contributions that reflect the changes in cataloging priorities for the year. This is also true for decreases in total submissions during the course of any given year. We increased the number of corporate body headings from fy05 267 to fy06 389 (a 46% increase). The number of series headings increased from fy05 335 to fy06 361 (an 8% increase). Again, we attribute the increase to cataloging support for participation in the 2nd phase of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Baldwin grant. However, a large portion of the new series headings and corporate bodies were contributed by the Science and Social Sciences Cataloging Unit’s work to provide cataloging and authority work for the IFAS Center Research reports.
We did not experience a huge influx of authority work, as anticipated, from cataloging projects with NACO authority components associated with the DLC this year. I expect the demand to supply authority control to digital collections to increase next year now that we have implemented Greenstone.
My goal for the NACO program next year is to coordiante a series of NACO training workshops to help increase the number of name and series authority contributions to the national database. In light of LC's decision to cease controlling series access points I believe all NACO participants will be called upon to fill in the gap.
