We contributed 1,664 new and changed name and series authority records to the National Authority File for fy03, an overall decrease of 392 (or a 19.1% decrease) from fy02 2,056. We show a slight increase in the number of new series authority records contributed from 403 to 416 - (a 3.2% increase) over last year, which is attributed again to the number of new name/title series headings created to support cataloging for the NEH Baldwin grant. In all other categories of authority contributions our totals decreased. Corporate bodies fell slightly from 232 to 227 - (a 2.2% decrease). Personal names and personal name revisions decreased respectively from 1,129 to 830 - (a 26.5% decrease); and from 159 to 128 - (a 19.5% decrease). This decrease may be associated with a lesser quantity of names contributed from the EDIS cataloging project for NACO, in spite of the decision to include secondary authors as part of the NACO work for the project in fy03. We attribute our decrease in total contributions, in part, to a shift in the department's cataloging priorities during the year to support the implementation of the new library system. However, we anticipated a drop in cataloging activity as catalogers engaged in data load review and training which directly impacted the number of new headings established for NACO.
As we continue our national level commitment to participate in NACO we continue to contribute and share in the cooperative benefits of enhanced patron access to library catalogs, both locally and nationally.
