Special Projects:

Coordinates in Authorities Project. Developed and promoted a proposal to include a specific data field for geographic coordinates in authority records. In late 2003 my familiarity with subject and name authority records for places and my experience cataloging maps and including geographic coordinates in a data field on their bibliographic records led me to a realization that a new data field for geographic coordinates in authority records can lead to significant improvements in potential user retrieval by geographic place in library catalogs and to greater interoperability of catalogs and other geographically important databases. I decided to work on making this happen, and began by introducing the idea and gaining support among my colleagues here and at meetings of map catalogers at ALA. The poster session on “Problems with Places in the Library Catalog,” which I presented at ALA in Orlando in 2004 with help from HelenJane Armstrong, Jorge Gonzalez and Paul Kirk was designed to focus attention on the need for improvements such as this. I presented drafts of the proposal to the Map and Geography Round Table, Map Cataloging Committee in 2004 and 2005 gaining their input and endorsement. In fall of 2005 I asked  Rebecca Guenther of the Library of Congress Network Development and MARC Standards Office to join me in this effort and she edited and submitted the paper for consideration at the MARBI meeting in January 2006. I introduced the discussion paper and participated in the meeting, which was highly favorable. This spring we incorporated the input from MARBI and new examples in the paper to submit it as a Proposal which was approved at the MARBI meeting in June 2006 and will become part of the MARC 21 Format for Authority Data. Current efforts include publicizing opportunities for making use of this new data field in database searching and collaborating with Colleen Cahill of the Library of Congress in facilitating the inclusion of this data in authority records.

USAIN Project. Coordinated cataloging for a grant to microfilm Florida Agriculture and Rural Life materials. Many of these reports to be filmed had not been cataloged previously, so a great deal of cataloging and making of name authority records for Florida authors and corporate bodies was required. In addition to the efforts of regular staff, I hired and supervised two temporary staff for this project in summer and fall of 2000.

Ephemeral Cities Project. Participated in planning and coordinated cataloging in this grant-funded cooperative digitization project  that is “an integrated collection of maps, documents, museum objects, photographs, and ephemera that breathe life into the static renderings of the historic fire insurance maps” of Gainesville, Tampa and Key West.
