CatMet Management Group Minutes
April 1, 2009
Attendees: Peter Bushnell, Jane Anne Carey, Jimmie Lundgren, Hikaru Nakano, Nancy Poehlmann, Betsy Simpson, Doug Smith, Priscilla Williams, Naomi Young
The plan is to do a direct ingest of records for IFAS EDIS publications into Endeca. Diana Hagan is extracting the file to send to FCLA so the records can be loaded into test.
UFDC records have been reloaded into test. Naomi will examine the serial records; Jimmie and Jorge the map records; and Betsy the book records.
Documents Cataloging Project
The stodocs team has begun the pilot to catalog the federal documents in storage. There is an e-mail group called "StoDocs Catalogers" and a stodocs blog is in development.
Copy 2's in storage
Naomi asked for input re. copy 2's (etc.) from branches retaining the original copy number designations when transferred to storage. This causes displays that are unnecessarily complex. Doug will request that Naomi be invited to the next Storage Committee meeting to discuss the issue. Naomi will bring it up on the 4/9/09 TSPC conference call.
Detailed Holdings display
Betsy mentioned a problem sent to the Catalog Problems mailbox recently that prevented the Detailed Holdings for a journal from displaying in Endeca. The Item Status needed to be changed from 02 to 01.
OCLC Reclamation Project
Plans are progressing re. the OCLC reclamation project. A group project ID has been assigned by OCLC; Jason is running reports to identify records that need revision prior to the record extraction; and FCLA is beginning to work on the project.
Department personnel and organizational changes
Hikaru has been approved for a nine month appointment beginning FY10.
Jane Anne is expected to move into a faculty position in the Authorities and Metadata Quality Unit at the conclusion of the NEH grant this spring. Her duties will include database maintenance functions as well as participation in special clean-up and cataloging projects. In addition, she will catalog and review cataloging work, with a special emphasis on Humanities and Special Collections material.
The unit head vacancy resulting from Nancy's appointment as Rare Books Librarian will not be filled, and her position will be used to offset one of the positions included in the department's 10% staff layoff proposal. To cover the unit head duties, the plan is to collapse the Science and Social Science Cataloging Unit and the Humanities and Special Collections Cataloging Unit into one Contributed Cataloging Unit and appoint a department associate chair to manage that unit and assist with department-wide activities. Final approval has not been received yet.
April department meeting
CMG endorsed inviting Rachel to attend the April department meeting.
Job Competency Development Working Group
Betsy reported that the library is forming a Job Competency Development Working Group to establish classification specific job competencies for library assistant and library associate positions. Doug will represent CatMet on the Working Group.
