Links Monitoring and Maintenance Committee Minutes
September 26, 2000

The Links Management and Maintenance Committee met in the Smathers Library Conference Room from 3-4:30 PM September 26. Present were: Lawan Orser, Daniel Cromwell, Priscilla Williams, Dot Hope, Naomi Young, Rich Bennett, Denise Bennett, Cecilia Botero, Peter Bushnell, and Jimmie Lundgren.

The meeting began with Dot Hope talking briefly about NetLibrary. We now can access a large number of published and free full text electronic books through NetLibrary. There are catalog records available that we expect to obtain in a few months. Details will need to be resolved concerning loading of these records. They use the digital reproduction cataloging style as outlined in LCRI 1.11A (use of 533 field on record that basically describes print version). An interesting discussion about this followed.

Lawan gave a short report on our broken link identification and correction program, complete with a PowerPoint presentation. We have been very successful in decreasing the number of broken links in our catalog while greatly increasing the number of links (the recent error rate for UF was 0.6 percent). There was an incidence of someone "correcting" links without inclusion of the "http://" part of the URL which was discovered by Lawan based on our link checking routine. The URL without that prefix will work in some browsers, but will not work in WebLUIS and is detected as an error by LINKBOT. A message went out recently to cataloging units to ask that the prefix always be included.

Peter talked about how he works with the monthly broken links report to make corrections or to refer items to the cataloger who entered them for further work.

Jimmie mentioned some changes in MARC coding and LC practice for cataloging digitized reproductions and distributed some illustrations. One of these is the MARC coding which provides coding for (but does not require) the use of anchor text to display in lieu of  URL's on public catalog records. This type of display is being used in the Florida Heritage Collection records. The SUS Digitization Committee is bringing the FHC out for the public this fall and catalogers are working to get all the records in good shape.  Priscilla is involved in working with the records that are on social science topics. The CAGER guidelines are in place for this work and CAGER is continuing to discuss other types of electronic resources and how they are presented to our patrons in our catalogs. FCLA is working to provide a PURL server to the SUS and plans to make it available later this fall.

The group round robin was interesting. Rich was asked about developments in JAKE and he said he has continued to implement improvements in the exciting way that the "open systems" concept seems to promote with successive improvements from different individuals each building upon the work of the others. Cecilia brought us up to date in Health Center electronic resources cataloging work and subscriptions for full-text aggregator databases for HC.
