Subject: FCLA's Plan for Intersession Jobs

Last Wednesday evening Lydia sent the message below about the only special Aleph job they had decided would need to be run during the week we are all closed. Subsequent to that message there have been various discussions about the LC Authority (and other) data updates and it now appears fairly certain that the job listed below will actually be run on a Sunday morning before that week. FCLA plans to be doing some actual updates of the LC, etc. files during that week.

Anyway, it appears that there will be no affect on staff.

I know there had been some concern expressed about being able to discharge items found in bookdrops during the week between Christmas and New Years. There wouldn't have been a problem with doing this even if the plan below had been implemented then; now there definitely won't be.

So I think we're pretty much set for this intersession period!

Subject: LC resource file re-indexing during Christmas break

At some point between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1 I will be running a job to regenerate the direct/numeric indexes in the LC resource file so that updating of that file can begin.

The impact on patrons will be virtually nonexistent - a minute or two when the authority links don't display while the job is started, but for catalogers the job will delete and then rebuild the numeric indexes, particularly the 010 field, making numeric searches of the LC resource file impossible.  I don't think that this will present any particular hardship to catalogers.  Because the ue_08 process in your bib libraries accesses the LCA10 library via the LCA10 library's pc_server I'm reluctant to turn that process off unless I know that nobody is planning large bib loads during the break.

What I need from you:

  • Please notify any catalogers who might have permission to modify LCA10 records to refrain from doing so during the Christmas break.  Any modification of records risks ruining the indexing job.

  • Please let me know when cataloging staff will/will not be working during the Christmas break.  If there's a window when no catalogers will be working I'll try to schedule the job for that time.  If not, I'll simply schedule the job and notify you when it's running.

Chances are that this job will not impact patrons or library staff at all, but if for some reason someone is planning a big cataloging project during the break it would be useful for me to have that information.

Thanks

Lydia
