Recommendations on Equipment

RS Assessment/Implementation Committee

Many equipment needs have already been addressed in these past few months as part of the relocation process:

Tables
Book trucks
Dedicated printer to batch jobs
Secure costly mobile equipment—Policy in place
Improve usability of VCR equipment—Media Center created and equipment purchased
Weed reference materials—Done
Upgrade quality of heavily used Reference material to be ordered through the Collection Manager for Library Sciences—Ongoing; staff have been encouraged to make suggestions

Recommendations:

  • Ask for a volunteer as a project to explore uses of scanner for RSD

  • Notify all staff of availability of any color printers which they might be able to use, or supply one for departmental use for specified need

  • Post “wish lists of equipment” online for easy reference so that when money is available staff have a register readily available to which they could refer. Perhaps keep an accounting of what was purchased as part of the same list

  • Provide training in the use of the equipment in the Library East Conference room

Result: Diana Hagan and Gerald Langford, members of the Working Group on Equipment asked that an amendment to these recommendations be added to this document.

Since the recommendations above deal with several pertinent issues that came up after the time the Working Group on Equipment surveyed the department, the members of the Working Group (Diana Hagan and Gerald Langford) would recommend additionally that new and emerging equipment needs of the Department continue to be surveyed periodically.

The following are taken from the recommendations by the Electronic WG and moved here per the unit heads’ suggestion.
  • Identify power users and post a definition of “power users” on Resource Services homepage or on the Systems Liaisons’ homepage. Provide a brief explanation of how computers are assigned.

Result: The PC Webopedia defines "power user" as "A sophisticated user of personal computers. A power user is typically someone who has considerable experience with computers and utilizes the most advanced features of applications." In Resource Services, such persons whose duties require more intensive use of their workstations may be given priority in upgrading to a more powerful machine when they are exceeding the capabilities of their current computer, even though it may be newer than workstations in use by other staff in the department. The allocation of batches of replacement computers within the library is made by the Director of Technical Services, and then assignments to particular people within the department are usually made by the Department Chair in consultation with the liaison coordinator(s).  There are many other considerations besides power use of computers that are taken into consideration, such as the age, condition, and usage of the computer and the convenience of the user.  Sometimes the allocation to the department has been designated to replace specific WSIDs, in which case there may be little to decide within the department.

  • Explore the possibilities of providing a color printer that all staff members can use and establish guidelines for its use.
Result: A networked color printer for the department has been purchased and installed in Pole 5, next to the mailboxes.  Parameters for its use will be set up.
