Recommendations On Training

RS Assessment/Implementation Committee

Result of meeting: The unit heads unanimously applauded and appreciate the efforts of the Training Committee. Many of the recommendations have been implemented and continue to be addressed.

A Resource Services Department Training Committee has been officially established and is actively addressing the training needs expressed in the surveys and lists of priorities that resulted from the Assessment Process. It has 11 members representing all units and in the Department, including the Systems Liaisons. The following recommendations only augment the well articulated goals of the Training Committee itself, which are located at
http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/rs.rsd/rs_training_comm.htm

  • Use technical services roundtable as training venue, and also as a place where staff can give presentations on topics that may not be directly related to training but are of some general interest to the community as a whole or some part of it

Schedule regular training sessions in the first floor conference room of Library East in order to make use of the multimedia technology available in that room. This will enhance training procedures that are already in place and ensure that all staff performing certain duties are kept up-to-date on departmental changes regarding said duties.

Some topics to address:

  • Find and share useful paraprofessional websites to link to the RSD homepage
  • Provide training in new software programs
  • Improve the sharing of knowledge between staff members, such as how individuals creatively use macros, improve searching ability in OCLC
  • Invite speakers to address the department on the topic of libraries as learning institutions. Consider bringing in outside speakers
  • Train new employees in a well-rounded manner
  • Continue to identify and acquire externally developed and updated training manuals for departmental reference area and homepages

These could include the following:

  • Online cataloging tutorials
  •  Foreign language dictionaries
  • Computer software guides relevant to programs used in department
  • Atlases and other geographic materials
  • Training videos and software, if available
  • Explore and create avenues for feedback regarding training and work related issues

Possible avenues could include:

  • Setting up special email account
  • Employing a centrally located suggestion box
  •  Provide a comment area on Resource Services Training web page

Result: The Training Committee did or will institute a special email account, a suggestion box, and a bulletin board on the 3rd floor of RSD will be devoted just to the Training Committee
