Subject: decisions made at 1/6 Cat A-B-C trainers meeting

The Cat A-B-C trainers (Julia, Doug, Gerald, Tatiana, Jorge, Jackie) met January 6 to discuss various outstanding training issues. Noted below are the decisions made at that meeting.

  • Context: striking a balance between the minutia and the big picture; elucidating clear objectives for each class

Julia's proposed course template, which provides a framework for stating course objectives, will be used to create the trainee documentation. Trainers agreed to begin transferring their class outlines to this format.

Training Document Format

  • Continuity: making sure each class flows logically into the next

Cat A and B1 will be geared to a broad cross-section of cataloging staff and cover Cat Module intro; searching; reading, deriving, and editing bibs; reading, creating and editing holdings and items.

Additions to Cat A:
Searching in Search module vs. Cat module
Nav Map and pushing to Cat module

Revision of Cat B1:
Move diacritics and authorities to Cat B2

Revision of Cat B2:
Move BIB and HOL suppression to Cat B1

As Gerald and Tatiana rework Cat B1 and B2, they will consider how best to introduce provisional creation and adds.

While there are some advantages to having individual cataloging trainers teach the range of classes to assigned units, the decision was made for the trainers to take responsibility for teaching a particular class to all eligible trainees. However, the assignments set forth in the minutes above will serve as liaison relationships. Trainers will build upon the course offerings by providing additional, focussed assistance to meet the needs of their assigned units.

  • Documentation: figuring out how detailed the training "scripts" or "outlines" should be

The detailed procedure section of the course template will serve as a trainer script.

  • Serials: addressing training for serials; possibilities for incorporating serials-related information into Cat A-B-C

Doug, Julia, Gerald, and Tatiana will talk to Naomi about the usefulness of incorporating serials examples into Cat A and Cat B1.
