Annual Highlights, 2010/2011
Organization. Susan Duser joined the unit as a full-time Library Associate 1 in December and has learned to catalog books as well as maps. Angie Soto, and Donna Reynolds joined the StoDocs full time staff, with Melissa Ware working there for most of the year.
Projects. The Florida History Articles cataloging project was begun in May with part-time OPS help from Michelle ElNeil directed and now being completed by Jorge with help from Beatriz. More than 700 articles about Florida that had been digitized now have descriptive data in Connexion files that will have FAST subjects and quality control applied, added to OCLC, and loaded into the UFDC metadata. Jimmie worked on review of metadata status in UFDC projects towards recommendations for loading to Mango. Hank coordinated systematic review and cataloging of library databases with help from Greg and Beatriz as well as cataloging of Guides@UF. Jorge and Jimmie worked extensively to prepare and submit CLIR grant proposals for cataloging Florida History maps in 2010 and 2011, along with Jim Cusick, Carol McAuliffe and Bess DeFarber. Hank resolved many serials issues from Catalog Problems. Patricia and Susan C. cataloged a large number of North Carolina newspaper microfilm.
Custom Cataloging. Jay, Patricia, Susan C., Susan D., Randy and Hank under Jane Ann’s oversight contributed to the successful project to complete Egolf gift cataloging for the Baldwin Collection by June 30. Randy, Beatriz and Peter worked on rare materials cataloging. Randy began work on the Coffee Collection of miniature books and kept up with masters projects from AFA. Hank cataloged more Cooper Science books. Patricia cataloged feature films with added fields for genre and nationality. Jane Anne cataloged digital reproductions from Internet Archive. Greg continued to catalog Frontline and other selected PBS programs available remotely, as well as reports from the Water Management Districts in Florida. Susan C., Greg and Jorge continued to complete antique map catalog records in the Map & Imagery Library and Jorge trained Ken Solomon in original cataloging of maps. Susan D. made excellent progress in relearning to catalog maps which she had done with Dr. Armstrong in the 1990’s, quickly becoming independent for maps with copy.
Documents. Jackie Brown continued to work as Documents Liaison. She trained and coordinated 3 full-time temporary staff (Melissa Ware, Angie Soto and Donna Reynolds) in the StoDocs Project at ALF and completed many originals and enhances. She also cataloged European Community and Planning Docs. Jorge worked with originals and helped with the problem solving and organizating the materials. Hank continued to catalog serials and oversee items work by student assistants. Beatriz and Susan D. cataloged StoDocs at ALF one day a week. Jimmie coordinated with monthly meetings and meeting with StoDocs staff in ALF biweekly.
National and State Programs. All Unit staff submitted personal names to NACO. Jimmie submitted 9 SACO headings that were proposed by various unit members and she mentored other Florida SACO contributors. Strong contributions were made to CONSER and BIBCO by unit members. Jane Anne served as a member of the Florida State Standards task group. Jimmie served as liaison from the TSPC to the SULOPAC Committee until December. Jorge assisted with the Hispanic Alumni Event in Miami.
Shared Storage Access. Jackie worked on consulting, problem resolution and some cataloging of ALF storage books on request throughout the year, and Hank resolved ALF serials issues.
IFAS Centers. Jorge visited IFAS Center libraries in Lake Alfred, Belle Glade and Homestead. He helped in re-organizing the Homestead IFAS Library. He continued to train staff and help with cataloging.
