Open Access Journal Project

Draft Procedure

  1. Email Naomi with the title(s) you wish to claim. She will maintain the master list.
  2. Search the title on OCLC. If you find an authenticated record for the e-journal (EncLvl=blank), you’ve done all you have to do. Send Naomi the title, OCLC #, and LCCN from the 010 field.
  3. If there is only an RDA record, send Naomi the title, OCLC #, and LCCN if there is one.  DO NOT create an AACR2 record.
  4. If you find an authenticated record for the print journal, derive an e-journal record from the print record, print it out, and put it in the basket for review. Please write “DOAJ” at the top of the printout. Naomi will record the data from this record.
  5. If you find an unauthenticated record for an e-journal, upgrade it. Print it out, and put it in the basket for review. Please write “DOAJ” at the top of the printout. Naomi will record the data from this record.
  6. If you find an unauthenticated record for a print journal, derive an e-journal record from the print record, print it out, and put it in the basket for review. Please write “DOAJ” at the top of the printout. Naomi will record the data from this record.
  7. If you do not find a record, create an original record for the e-journal. Print it out, and put it in the basket for review. Please write “DOAJ” at the top of the printout. Naomi will record the data from this record.
  8. For any record you edit, create a CONSER PURL if the record does not have one. CONSER PURLs begin with the string:  http://bibpurl.oclc.org.  Naomi or Hank can walk you through creating a PURL.

Here is a link to the project FAQ on the CONSER site. This explains what to do with duplicate records, and other odd situations. .

The directions for cataloging an electronic resource are in Module 31 of the CONSER Cataloging Guide in Cataloger’s Desktop. If you’d rather learn by doing, please make a one-hour appointment with Naomi. Bring any printouts you find for your title.
