The African Languages and Literatures collection at the George A. Smathers Libraries includes language materials from dozens of languages spoken in sub-Saharan Africa. The collection is focused primarily on the languages taught at the University. These include Akan, Shona, Swahili, Xhosa, and Yoruba.

Comparative Bantu On Line Dictionary (CBOLD)
"The CBOLD project was started in 1994 by Larry Hyman and John Lowe to produce in Berkeley a lexicographic database to support and enhance the theoretical, descriptive, and historical linguistic study of the languages in the important Bantu family."
Ethnologue: Languages of the world
The electronic version from SIL (Summer Institute of Language) of the original printed catalogue of over 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries, the Ethnologue database provides the Ethnologue Language Name Index, and the Ethnologue Language Family Index.
Foundation for Endangered languages
Includes a newsletter and conference archive as well as many links related to African languages.
Languages of Africa via University of Pennsylvania
Includes links to information about the spoken languages of Africa, as well as linguistic analysis of some African languages.
On-line Dictionaries
A nearly comprehensive set of world language dictionaries available on the Internet (by a number of different means, from Acrobat files to Java interactive web pages). Includes five languages under "Atlantic-Congo Languages," more than thirty Bantu languages, Igbo, Shona, Swahili, Wolof, and more.
Yamada Language Guide
Created and maintained by the Yamada Language Center staff at the University of Oregon, this excellent home page provides guides for many languages of the world. Includes some African languages and links to many Africa-related newsgroups and mail lists.

Swahili Resources

The Kamusi Project
The Internet Living Swahili Dictionary  is maintained by the Yale Program in African Languages and the Council on African Studies at Yale.  It is a collaborative work by people all over the world.
Noun Classification in Swahili
A searchable database maintained by Ellen Contini-Morava Department of Anthropology, Program in Linguistics at the University of Virginia.
Kiswahili Grammar Notes
Maintained by the Kamusi Project at Yale University, it has some chapters on Swahili functional grammar.
Swahili Studies: A Working Bibliography
Compiled by Kelly M. Askew, Indiana University. Provided by the Tanzania Studies Association, which has a number of other useful scholarly and research related resources.

Yoruba

The Institute of Yoruba Language and Culture
Produced by Egbe Isokan Yoruba for preservation of the Yoruba Culture among the descendants and others learning to understand and speak this West African language (Nigeria, Benin).

African writers: Voices of Change
Includes short biographical sketches of several African authors,as well as a page for Francophone African poets in English translation including brief biographical sketches and short excerpts from each author's work.
Karen Fung's Africa - Literature page
From Stanford University. Provides links to many resources on the web for African Literature in non-African languages including numerous links to individual authors.
The Voice of the Shuttle
Alan Liu links to many resources for humanities research on the web, with sections on African literature in English and African literature in non-English languages.
