The Howe Library

When the Parkman Dexter Howe collection was purchased by the University Libraries in 1980, a series of special bookplates was designed for use in each volume. Variations in the series designate specific major donors or groups of donors who participated in the fund drive to purchase the collection. In some cases the bookplate specifies the works of a particular author within the collection that was purchased with the donor's funds. Examples from the series follow.

The feathered crown pictured at the top of each Howe Library bookplate is taken from the Howe family crest.

When new materials are purchased for the collection, a bookplate like this one is used. In the case of a gift, "gift of _______" is typed in the center. The bookplate program is administered by staff in the Special Collections Department, Rare Books and Manuscripts.
