"Using Tags in a University Library: Pros and Cons" As we contemplate using Tags in our catalog to allow users to assign keywords to records for retrieval we need to first consider several options. There is the issue of "sloppy tags", meaning tags which are malformed or have no extrinsic meaning. Security concerns in the wake of the AOL scandal will be considered as well (i.e. unintended consequences). The benefits of tagging will be highlighted and explored (Tag Clouds, Interest Timeline, Information Discovery). Plans for a UF tagging project will be discussed. |

" Using Electronic Resources to Create Department Publication Lists " Librarians have traditionally compiled publication lists for academic departments, however with the increasing number of journal articles and interdisciplinary nature of research, creating these lists can be extremely cumbersome. At the request of the Astronomy department last year, I developed and semi-automated a method of tracking their publications using the major scientific article databases. The publication list has proved very popular with their faculty and has provided a welcome venue for publicizing our library resources. In this presentation, I will discuss my method and the pitfalls that arose with the use of the databases, RefWorks, and distribution of the lists. |
