| An original red book for the House and Grounds of Witton in Norfolk. Manuscript. 1801; [9] leaves: ill., 1 col. map, plans; 22 x 30 cm. (4to) + [1] leaf. Humphrey Repton, (1752-1818):
Repton was professionally consulted to remark upon improvement of Witton, Woodhouse's country estate, primarily its landscape. Humphrey Repton carried on Capability Brown's landscape garden mastery, though Repton introduced gravel walks and re-introduced separate flower gardens. He also replaced the earlier classical ornaments with romantic structures like grottoes and fake ruins. The red books were volumes created for each landscaping client, complete with carefully drawn before-and-after maps, illustrations, watercolors, and ideas for changes to the client's gardens. These volumes were then bound in red leather and presented to the client. Online at http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00102143 |
