Rebecca's Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World
by Jon F. Sensbach

In Rebecca's Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World, Jon F. Sensbach sweeps the reader into his historical biography as if it were a well-crafted novel. I am especially impressed by Jon's graceful and poetic use of language and skill at weaving colorful details of quotidian life into this account of epic events in the history of black Christianity in the Americas. Having visited the old sugar plantations of the Virgin Islands as a tourist, I'm learning from Jon's book about the enslaved Africans and Creoles who labored there, and about a remarkable former slave turned evangelist who played a key role in shaping African-American culture.

Jon F. Sensbach is Associate Professor of History at the University of Florida.
