STANDARD "DOUBLE-FOLD" TEST FOR BRITTLENESS

How to Perform a DFT

  • A "double-fold" test (dft) is less subjective than a flex test.

  • To test: select the outside corner of any page other than the title page, bend a small portion of it down toward you then press the fold between your fingers.

  • Unfold the corner and bend it back in the opposite direction away from you then press the fold again.

  • Straighten out the fold and pull out gently on the corner.

  • You have now performed one "double fold".

Counting the Double Folds

  • If the corner detaches during the first pull, the dft is one; if the corner separated from the page without (or before) the pull, the dft is zero.

  • Continue double-folding the corner selected counting each double-fold until the corner detaches or five double fold attempts are completed.

  • If the corner is still attached after five double folds, the book is not considered brittle.
