STAMPS USED FOR BRITTLE BOOKS

Stamps Currently In Use

  • Red Star
    • The Red Star is the only Brittle Books Program stamp that is currently in use.
    • The Red Star indicates that the volume is being retained until physical condition requires withdrawal.
    • There is no such thing as permanent retention of a volume in circulating collections. Heroic conservation treatment is merited only by items in Special Collections..
      • The volume, if not reformatted, may be re-reviewed by Collection Management (CM) prior to withdrawal.
      • Special Collections staff review materials for transfer into Special Collections.

Stamps Previously Used

  • All previously used stamps are obsolete and materials containing them will be given another review.
  • Previous stamps include:

        • May be film for which filming standards are unknown.
        • Previously, Brittle Books did not distinguish by probable quality of film and marked all titles as "currently available".
        • Currently, only film produced after 1987 is considered "currently available" and appropriate for purchase attempts. Older film has generally proven "unavailable" for purchase.
        • Reformat Available might also indicate reprint available.
