WHY ST. AUGUSTINE?

TEACHER SHEET

Objective: To use early maps, aerial photographs, and readings to discuss where Spanish explorers landed in Florida and where colonies were established.

Guidelines:
  1. Have the students read "Sailing to St. Augustine."
  2. Pass out the worksheet and have students complete the first two sections.
  3. Discuss as a class the key factors the students listed in the first two sections. Make a list of these factors recording how many students noted each.
  4. To complete the rest of the worksheet, the students will need to study various images. This can be done by having the students work independently or in groups at the computer, or you can project the images for the whole class to view. Show the images in order beginning with no.1 and have the students answer the questions on their worksheets as they review the images.
