Staffing
Provide digital object cataloging and metadata to the partnership
dLOC institutions, generally, are able to train staff for digitization of archival and library resources and to effectively create digital collections. Digital object cataloging, however, requires advanced skills and understanding, which are not easily learned.
High
Staffing
Provide assistance with creation of archival collections finding guides
Every dLOC institution, generally, faces very large and mounting collections of unprocessed archival resources. Until these resources can be organized, processed and described, gems of historical and social value go missing.
High
Equipment
Provide imaging hardware for fragile / large format / bound volumes
Some dLOC institutions hold extremely valuable but extremely fragile, often large format and bound materials. Caribbean collections are subject to tropical environments that are unkind to paper and other archival collections. Many dLOC institutions, while caring for their holdings, are unable to provide climate controls requisite to long term preservation. Mold, insects, and tropical storms have each taken their toll. Vital and historical records are being lost to their ravages. Reproduction together with conservation of such resources is needed.
