10. Number and size of Library Digital Collections

  1. Number of collections:  245 active collections
    Prior counts were based on our official collection definitions and counts. In 2007-2008, UF moved more materials to be defined within large subcollections of even larger collections to increase serendipity. Given the holdinsg within each subcollection, they parallel the norm for digital collections and for ARL reporting purposes, the 245 active collections is based on the subcollection count.

    Full Digital Archive: 93 TB
    Actual online ready-use files: 6.77TB for JP2 files; 2TB for other derivative images, text, and metdata files
    Digital archive includes the archival masters (TIFF, MPEG, etc) and all derivatives (Zoomable JPEG2000, text files, standard JPEGs, JPEG thumbnails, audio and video files, PDF, etc.). The online ready-use files do not include the archival masters.

12.  Direct costs of digital collections construction and management

  1. Direct cost of personnel: $498,390
    2008-2009: $335,160 + fringe@33.12% = $446,164 + $52,226 OPS = $498,390
    In August 2009, two new staff members were hired and the salary cost changes will be reflected for the next reporting year (2009-2010). Funding from the Everglades grant, the dLOC grant, and internal mini-grants not included in the total above.
    2007-2008: Note, $598,786.26 includes fringe for salaries and $70,056.29 OPS.
    Two senior librarians, Erich Kesse and Stephanie Haas, left half way through the fiscal year and thus lowered the overall salary expenditure, and the Baldwin and dLOC Grants would add another 80,787 (this is not included in the above).

  2. Direct cost of equipment, software, or contracted services:
    2008-2009: major purchases include replacement high speed scanners (ticket 31028); 3D image capture equipment (ticket 31679 for a laptop + equipment ordered through BH for $9,519); audio equipment (ticket 30416); and new UFDC server space (ticket 28395)
    2007-2008: Systems: $64,024 (which includes the DLC San, which was $49,971)
    2006-2007: $225,000

Volumes digitized and online for 2008-2009 include photos, videos, objects, paintings, articles, reports, audio, newspapers, books, letters, posters, etc, as well as files digitally ingested and normalized for online access and preservation.

    November 2009: 106,814 bibliographic items for all years (various numbers of volumes, all with various page lengths) being tracked, and others would increase this number in the final digitization stage but that are not tracked sent from partners to dLOC and not in main tracking system.
