CHOOSING THE CORRECT PATRON ID FOR BRITTLE BOOKS.
- Brittle Books uses several patron id's, each having a specific function:
- Brittle Books Cards.
- Used for all incoming volumes, to immediately identify the materials as being detained by Brittle Books. A user message is displayed to the NOTIS public view.
- Used for non-grant brittle books remaining in the Preservation Department Reprographics Unit (in the Brittle Books arrearage awaiting selector review, cataloging or reformatting).
- Currently using:
- To Be Reviewed, for all new incoming materials.
- Photocopy, for all materials awaiting photocopying.
- Recharged, for all materials renewed from Circulation lists.
- Replacements to Order, for all materials awaiting replacement order.
- Replacements Ordered, for all materials awaiting replacement arrival.
- To Be Filmed, for all titles awaiting filming.
- Special Collections Review, for all titles needing review by Special Collections staff.
- To Fetch, for all titles needing additional volumes pulled from the primary location.
- Reprographics Materials Cards.
- SOLINET cards.
- Used for all materials from the main circulating collections proven suitable for SOLINET grants, through post-filming review.
- Informs NOTIS patrons that the volume is "out for filming", while inviting user requests.
- Brittle Books cards have a renewal periods of approximately two years and a theoretical limit of 500 charges per card.
CHARGING BRITTLE VOLUMES.
- Every volume held by Brittle Books is cataloged on NOTIS and recorded as temporarily detained in the Preservation Department, either through a charge or user message.
- Item ID.
- Item id's (barcodes) are placed in every volume for which it is appropriate, and are charged to a Patron ID of the Brittle Books Program, according to disposition (Non-Grant, SOLINET, etc.).
- Each volume has a separate item record and item id or barcode.
- Item records for volumes in a multi-volume set include enumeration and (if appropriate) chronology.
- User Messages.
- Brittle Books is unable to charge items to some locations (Reference, Special Collections, etc) so must identify holding the volume on NOTIS through use of a user message.
- To display to the public, the user messages (um notes) must be the first note present in the field, and should be separated from any other notes by a delimiter "a".
- Any material held by Brittle Books on the premises may be used by the Patron.
