Digital Library Center: Budgeting

Budgeting for new digital projects includes several components:

  • Collection landing page design and backend collection code set up.
    • Done as needed. Includes:
      • Collection code assignment
      • Coordination with CatMet to have collection cataloged at the collection level
      • Wordmarks for any partners
      • Collection banner design
      • Collection landing page set up
      • May have collection interfaces added
      • May have supplementary pages or technologies added (this cost to the Libraries varies widely depending on what's needed)
  • Metadata, inventory, and other ingest costs for new items
  • Digitization and Processing Costs
    • Digitization and/or processing costs including scanning, intake of digital files, image correction, QC, OCR, metadata enhancement, loading, and archiving in terms of labor and machinery/equipment usage.
    • The cost to the Libraries varies widely based on type of materials, amount of materials physically, eventual digital size, handling, equipment availability, and more.
  • Costs for UFDC space
    • Systems can get quotes for space. The space cannot be reasonably partitioned smaller than 500GB right now because of the sizes that can be bought. Each new drive setup requires overhead from hardware installation and configuration costs.
    • CNS virtual servers may be an option later on, but we haven't tested yet so this would be more in overhead to test and make it work. This is also a monthly cost. There's more on it here.
    • Costs are for initial space, but the Libraries are assuming costs in perpetuity.
  • Costs for archival space
    • This will soon be through CNS's Tivoli. The costs are online here and costs effective 10/1/09 are:
      • Transfer: $204.80/TB
      • Storage: $160.60/TB/year
Prior costs $349/TB transfer and $219/TB/year hosting.
    • Again, this is an ongoing cost.
