Aleph

Aleph is the name of our current library management system. It was purchased from Ex Libris in 2004 to replace the NOTIS/LUIS system.

The installation documentation is based on Rich Bennett's original Microsoft Word document. It should still exist somewhere around here:
\\Smathersnt2r\Projects\Aleph\Client Downloads\.

Installation

  1. Uninstall any previous versions of Aleph: Start | Programs | Aleph500UFPROD | Uninstall.
  2. Copy this folder from the network to the desktop:
    \\Smathersnt2r\Projects\Aleph\Client Downloads\UF PRODUCTION CLIENT [version number]\Aleph500UFPROD.
  3. Open the folder and run SETUP.EXE.
  4. For the method of installation prompt, select stand-alone (the default).
  5. For the installation type, select typical (the default).
  6. For the directory name, click Browse, and replace C:\AL500 with C:\AL500UFPROD (no spaces).
  7. For the program manager group, replace ALEPH 500 with Aleph500UFPROD (no spaces).
  8. Check Version Check on boot.
  9. During installation, say yes to whatever prompts you get, except the last one: restart.
  10. Once the installation is complete, drag the Aleph500UFPROD folder to the Recycle Bin, and then restart the computer.

For Windows XP computers, update the permissions on two folders to allow Power Users to write to them. (If temp does not already exist, create it.)

Follow this procedure for each folder:

  1. Right click it.
  2. Select Properties | Security | Add | Locations.
  3. Choose the WSID number (not smatherslib).
  4. Click OK | Advanced | Find Now.
  5. Select Power Users from the list, then OK | OK.
  6. Check the Write box under Allow, then OK.

Update from Rich Bennett, 2006-10-16:

Systems Liaisons Aleph Client Installation Special Instructions
=================================================

Smathers Systems Liaisons need to do client upgrades on the staff machines in order for the program to be available in the All Users folder.

On Windows XP machines, after installing the new client, you will need to set the permissions to add Real Users to the group. To do this:

Right click on the new Aleph folder created on the C drive.
Choose properties
Click the Security tab
Click Add
Click Advanced
Click Find Now
Locate Real Users
Click Add
In the Properties window, make sure all items are checked under Allow, except Full Control and Special Permissions and then click OK.

Use

To launch an Aleph module, select Start | Programs | Aleph500UFPROD | [module name].

When connected you will see this address at the bottom of the screen: [Host Name] aleph.fcla.edu [Port] 6545.

After May 10, 2004, individuals will be assigned a username and password to use.
