Instant Messaging (IM)
This is the latest policy on instant messaging for the Libraries:
From: Bill Covey Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 5:18 PM To: All Library Staff List (UF) Subject: America Online (AOL) Instant Messaging (IM) AOL-IM software permits an Instant Message to contain a link to a Web site. There is a flaw in the way this is done, and it permits someone to send a link which can take over your computer and/or destroy your data. There is no patch for this at this time. Best practice is to avoid using IM software of any kind at work. There is seldom a legitimate business need to do so. However, some software installs IM automatically, and you may receive AOL-IM messages without sending any yourself. In any event, it is important not to click on any URL links which are sent via IM. The messaging itself is safe as far as we know, but links to Web sites received in IM are not. Bill Covey Systems
