Portable Hard Drives

LaCie Porsche USB (160GB)

There are currently 20 of these in the department.

Unlike the other model, these came formatted for Windows and do not need any drivers installed.

  1. Plug in the power cord.
  2. Flip the switch up to the "on" position.
  3. Plug the USB cable into the computer.
  4. Give Windows a few moments to recognize the drive.

In case any of you would like to know the location of a particular drive at any given time, I have moved my databases (both Balwin & the entire list of drives) to the network. They are located at P:\Admin\Lacie_Drives. Lourdes Santamarķa, 2005-02-22.

LaCie Big Disk D2 (500GB)

There are currently 3 of these in the department.

To Install the Driver

This is necessary only for Windows 2000 computers. Windows XP already has the driver.

  1. Copy the EXE file at \\Smathersnt12\dlcdocs\DLCSystems\drivers\LaCie to the local desktop.
  2. Double click the local copy, and click your way through the installation.
  3. Restart the computer.

To Plug in the Drive

This should be done with a user already logged in.

  1. Plug in the drive's electrical cord, but not its USB cable.
  2. Despite the manufacturer's instructions, leave the drive off: do not press that big blue button.
  3. Then plug the USB cable into a USB port, and let the computer power up the drive and recognize it.

To Unplug the Drive

As with other external devices, left click the green-arrow Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray, and wait until it tells you Safe to Remove Hardware before unplugging the USB cable.

Troubleshooting

On one machine, Windows XP tried to assign it an already-used drive letter. That failed. I had to unassign the letter in Windows Explorer and restart the machine. Then everything went well.
