Restoring Windows 2000

For various reasons (malware, system crash, etc.) you may have to reformat a computer, and re-install Windows 2000.

Preliminary

  1. First, disconnect the box from the network. Why? Because of Campus Network Services' policy: if they detect a Windows 2000 box that is not patched up to at least Service Pack 4, they will shut the entire building off from the Internet and other networks. So it is very important to first disconnect the network cable from the back of the computer.
  2. Get the workstation's networking information from the database.
  3. Fetch the Windows 2000 restoration disks (both of them) from the Systems liaison bookshelf.

Disk 1 of 2: "Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3"

~45 minutes

  1. Insert the first disk, "W2K+SP3", and restart the computer.
If necessary, enter the BIOS to make sure that this workstation boots from CD-ROM before the hard drive.
  2. At the Press any key to boot from CD prompt, hit a key.
It will ask a bunch of fool questions about drives and partitions. Just let it reformat the entire drive to NTFS. This will take a while.
The product key is written on the disk and on its jewel case cover.
  3. At some point, it decides to restart itself.
    Leave the disk in.
  4. At the Press any key to boot from CD prompt, DO NOT hit a key: just leave it alone, and it will figure out that it is already part-way through the installation.
  5. You will go through several "Settings" pages. On the Network settings page, you might be propmted to select Custom settings. If so, check all three options:
    • Client for Microsoft Networks
    • File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
    • Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Right click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties.
Enter all the data for that workstation as well as the general data for DLC networking.
  6. Skip the Workgroup or Computer Domain for now: you cannot join it just yet.
  7. Remove the CD from its drive, and reboot the computer.

Disk 2 of 2: Installing "Windows 2000 Service Pack 4"

~10 minutes

  1. On the Users of this Computer page, select Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  2. Once logged in (as Administrator), insert the W2KSP4 disk and run the EXE file.
  3. When prompted, select Do not archive files.

Windows Updates

Congratulations, kid. You may now plug that network cable back in.

Then you must first do all Windows Updates, then call Systems to get the workstation back onto the domain.
